Decades ago when I was in my late teens and twenties, I had an eating disorder. I was depressed, and self-medicated with food. I was running away from the pain of my own self-judgment, and the judgments, both real and imagined, of other people. I felt that the only thing that could help me was if someone could love me and believe in me unconditionally, but of course someone like that is not easy to find, especially in the places I was looking. Truly I was killing myself with my eating habits, albeit slowly.
What helped was to give up my self-pity, give up my vanity, and just accept myself the way I was. It took a lot of work and was very painful at first to really feel the pain I had been anesthetizing with food. I decided I wasn't going to diet anymore, which I had always considered a punsihment, but I was going to eat in a healthy moderate way, but things that I enjoyed. I started going for walks in pretty, enjoyable places, even though it was at first 'boring' and depressing to be alone with my own thoughts. But also I stopped watching tv and movies which send the contradictory messages that food obsession is normal along with that only the slender and beautiful are to be valued. I began reading spiritually inspiring and helpful books instead. Soon my reading and my walks became my favorite activities. It took a lot of work and it took spiritual support from other people but fortunately and thankfully I became healthy.

There is also a book by Lucia Capacchione called 'Lighten up your Body - Lighten up your life' which has journal exercises directed toward body image and the relationship we have with our bodies. Many of my clients have benefited from working with that book.

Thank you for this outline. I have read Carol Looks protocols and they
have been very helpful in verbage and steps to take towards this issue
of weight but I personally have not worked with too many weight issues
as I have in the past referred them out rather than choosing to work
with the client. I had a block and/or pre-conceived idea of what the
client was going to behave like and just didn't want to deal.
I have, however decided to move beyond my limited thoughts and
perhaps "learn" something myself so I am currently working with 2
clients with this issue of weight. I'm sure once I get some experience
under my belt it will become easier and easier but again, thank you for
your experience and knowledge in this matter.
